ECG electrodes come in many forms with backings made from foam, breathable soft cloth, porous tape or clear tape in a variety of shapes.
ECG electrodes must operate consistently often under harsh conditions. While resting studies are relatively calm stress studies require good adhesion while in a wet environment ofter being pulled away from the skin. Pediatric and neonate electrodes must deliver good ecg readings from much smaller tabs on a moving body. Due to their unique use many neonate ecg electrodes come with leads attached.
Most basic general electrodes have the circular or teardrop shape formed out of foam with a conductive get and adhesive on the skin side. Many of the more specialized electrodes are smaller backed by cloth or tape desinged to work under unique situations such as being translucent, invisible to x-rays. Others are small tab shaped to easy application and easy removal. Many are MRI suitable up to 3.0 Tesla. Additionally there are those electrodes designed with soft gel formulas that can be re-positioned.
Most ECG electrodes have a lengthy shelf life typically 2-3 years if stored in a cool area unopened and 15-30 days in an opened pack then sealed off from outside air. Conditions such as direct sunlight, temperature and humidy can alter these timeables but with a little common ense and minimum care ECG electrodes can be preserved and serve your needs when most needed.
